Ather ramps up production to lower waiting period

India’s leading EV brand Ather Energy expects the waiting period of their scooters to come down significantly in the coming months. In key markets like Delhi NCR, Maharashtra, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, Ather has reported reduction of waiting period by 30-50%. For instance, the waiting period for an Ather scooter in Delhi NCR, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh has dropped to 3-4 weeks from 7-8 weeks and in Maharashtra, Gujarat Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Kerala it is 5-6 weeks from the 10-12 weeks. Lower waiting period is expected to encourage stronger booking and retail in the upcoming festive season.

The drop in the waiting period is a result of the company’s efforts in strengthening the supply chain and strategic investments to scale up its manufacturing operations over the past few months.

Speaking on the supply side ramp up, Ravneet S. Phokela, Chief Business Officer, Ather Energy said, “Over the last few quarters, we’ve had a very sharp focus on working with our supplier partners to ramp up our supply chain. We believe we’ve turned the corner, and are now looking at a very rapid scale up in order to not only meet the current and new demand, but also to clear up the large order book that we have built up over the last few months. This will bring our waiting period down quite dramatically. With these efforts, our month-on-month ramp-up is expected to be  around 20% - 25% in the current FY, enabling us to achieve 5X growth in YoY volumes

In September 2022, Ather reported its best ever monthly sales numbers by retailing 7435 units. The demand is largely driven by its latest scooter the 450X Gen 3 launched in July.  The company expects the momentum to continue in the coming months with the onset of the festive season.

To tap into the growing demand across the country, Ather has also been ramping its retail operations. The brand has expanded its retail operations to 54 Experience Centres (retail outlets) across Tier 1, 2 and 3 cities and plans to reach 100 cities with around 150 Experience Centres by March 2023.

In December 2021, Ather commissioned its second manufacturing facility in Hosur with an investment of INR 500 crores. Ather expects a considerable increase in volume once the plant is active, making it the leading 2W manufacturer in terms of volume.
